ChatGPT Conversation Not Loading? Find the Chat First

Separate a chat that will not open from one that is missing from the sidebar, then troubleshoot without confusing a display issue with deletion.

ChatGPT Conversation Not Loading? Find and Reopen Your Chats
Contents

ChatGPT opens and new chats work, but one important conversation spins forever. Or yesterday’s chat has disappeared from the sidebar. Those are different problems. First establish whether the chat is still in your account; then diagnose why it will not open.

This guide reflects OpenAI Help Center guidance checked on 2026-10-10. Menu labels can vary by device and workspace.

Which symptom do you have?

For a page that never opens at all, see the separate ChatGPT not loading guide. The steps below address conversations when the rest of ChatGPT is available.

Missing from the sidebar? Search before assuming deletion

OpenAI says the sidebar may show only a compact set of recent chats. An older conversation disappearing from that list does not mean it was deleted. Open Search in the sidebar and enter a distinctive phrase from the title or messages. On the web, use Ctrl+K on Windows or Cmd+K on Mac. Select the Chats or All filter if offered. Archived chats can also appear in results. See OpenAI’s guide to finding chats.

If search returns nothing, confirm the email address, sign-in method, and current workspace. Personal and organization workspaces can show different content. Then open Settings → Data controls → Archived chats. Archiving removes a chat from the regular sidebar while keeping it in the account.

One conversation will not open: isolate the failure

Keep the conversation URL or ID before changing anything. If part of the conversation is visible, save any urgent text. Then:

  1. Check OpenAI Status for a relevant incident.
  2. Refresh once and reopen the chat from Search. Test a different known chat as a comparison.
  3. Sign into the same account and workspace in a private window or another browser. If it works there, inspect extensions and site data in your usual browser.
  4. Try another device or network. On a managed network, ask the administrator whether filtering is interfering.

OpenAI’s error troubleshooting guide covers extensions, VPNs, proxies, cookies, and network tests. Clearing site data will sign you out, so first make sure you can complete sign-in. It may fix a local loading problem; it cannot restore a deleted chat.

Still missing after search and archive checks?

Recheck the account and workspace, and look for a current service incident. A data export from Settings → Data controls can help confirm which chats are still stored in that account, though it may not reflect a recent change immediately.

If the chat was deleted, OpenAI says neither ChatGPT nor Support can restore it. Temporary Chats also do not appear in ordinary chat history. Avoid third-party services promising recovery of deleted conversations.

When to contact Support

If one chat fails across browsers, devices, and networks while other chats work and there is no relevant status incident, contact OpenAI Support. Include the approximate time and time zone, browser and device, error screenshot, conversation URL or ID, and the checks you completed. Do not send a password or verification code. In an organization workspace, ask an administrator about permissions and retention settings too.

If the obstacle is the sign-in screen, use our ChatGPT login and verification guide.
